PACIFIC RIM : UPRISING

Overview: I was brought into this project after the design and concept phases. The film was utilizing a combination of assets designed in Illustrator and then built / textured and animated in Cinema 4d to create a vast array of 3D holographic controls. My role within this large team consisted of layout work, some small specific design details and animating various elements in the scene as well as creating overall loops that could be used shot by shot.

From the gif’s you can see on the left, I was responsible for placement and animation on various aspects of each shot as well as others not included here.

JAEGER : HOLOGRAM CONSOLE

Overview : Whislt a lot of the designs and texturing had been completed already, the team and I were responsible for adjusting the look of key elements and creating smaller assets, adding in and templating animations to match the sequence as well as adjusting layouts of the various parts that made up the hologram. These were all done within Cinema 4D. We were given geo alembics from both Maya as well as on set camera data and lidar scans from the various sets to ensure everything matched the footage we were working with.

BACKGROUND TELEMETRY SCREENS

Overview : Although a little on the blurry side, I was able to create a couple of UI screens that feature in the background of the shots below, the other screens and general aesthetics were designed by Gordon Spurs and the team. These were simple radar scans and general purpose telemetry, but none the less they are all part of the process to bring eahc shot to life. These were designed in Adobe Illustrator and animated in Adobe Effects.

PACIFIC RIM : UPRISING

Overview: Coming in the project late on meant a lot of the designs had alreayd taken place. After having worked at Territory on a few big projects already I was upto the challenge of designing Screen UI for the command centre and more importantly forming layouts and animating the stunning 3D holographics used in the Jaeger controls. I was involved from the middle of the project right up until the delivery.

GFX REEL : TERRITORY

JAEGER HOLOGRAM : fui

Overview : As part of our work we DNEG, we were provided with alembics for the camera data and lidar scans from the set. Having had a lot of the designs already in place from the other designers, I was repsonsible with the team to create layouts for the various parts as well as template aniamtions for the individual elements.

The animations needed to loop, but also be controllable to reflect the intenstity of the scene. Below are a few examples from shots I was responsible for. Once we had built and animated in Cinema 4D we handed over our passes to the amazing guys using Nuke who really brought it all to life.

COMMAND CENTRE : SCREEN GFX

Overview : A smaller task I was assigned whilst getting up to speed was to help design and animate screen graphics for the command centre. A lot of the screens and graphics already in place were designed by the very talented Gordon Spurs and Daniel Hojlund. Using their exisitng work for reference I created some simple telemetry and radar screens. These were built in Adobe Illustrator and then animated in Adobe After Effects before being put into 3D using the set alembics we had been provided. Although they are a little blurry in the background they were essential in completing the overall aesthetic of the shots.
