teenage cancer trust : local hero 2023

Overview: GHM&D was honored to be asked by the team at Electric Theatre to help out on The Teenage Cancer Trust's projection animation that was due to be displayed at the Outernet in Soho. The 8+ minute music video was created to reflect the aesthetic of the track as well as numerous world renown artists who contributed to Mark Knopfler's 'Local Hero'.

The Outernet was split into 3 screens, East, South and the Ceiling. This was an enormous task as the screens combined were nearly 8K in resolution with the ceiling adding another 4k on top.

Each section was split into different styles of which we were initially responsible for 5 of them. Creating styleframes that can be seen below we helped with the initial animatic, developing these styles into animations curating the sequence and matching timings of the animation to key notes, beats and guitar strums of the track.

Over the course of the project we had to deal with our share of various challenges. From the sheer scale of the renders to the changing of the project delivery specifications. With a few weeks remaining, the project took a sudden shift in unforeseen circumstances. A delay to the tracks release meant we were no longer working to the Outernet Deliverables and instead needed to work to YouTube Specs. At the same time the creative narrative also took a change in direction and many of the shots needed redesigning. Something that continued after my time on the project was done.

Because of this, some of the shots we had been working on needed to be distributed amongst the team. The remaining shots all needed to be converted from the ultrawide double screens into a single 16:9 frame. This meant that we had a very large task ahead of us, but the team cracked on, worked the problems and found solutions.

Below in the individual shots, you will notice some of the earlier animations in their original ratio and updated shots in the newly configured 16:9.

After we finished the project continued to adapt and change to the clients needs, but we are proud to see that we have work remaining throughout on such a worthy cause and project.
